Speaking is assessed during your interview. You'll also complete a reading test (read one sentence aloud) and a writing test (write one sentence correctly).
The officer asks up to 20 questions from the 128 civics questions (2025 version). You must answer 12 correctly to pass. Applicants 65+ with 20 years as a permanent resident may study just the 20 starred questions and need 6 of 10 correct.
The officer reviews your Form N-400 answers and may ask follow-up questions about your background.
Most applicants learn the decision the same day: approved, continued, or denied.
